In a previous blog, I mentioned over 70% of boomers are not prepared emotionally for retirement. To increase your chances of a successful retirement, here are several actions.
Holistic retirement planning focuses on integrating stability with physical health, emotional well-being, and social connection. A holistic approach ensures you “retire to” a purposeful life rather than just “retire from” a career.
1. Financial Stability & Strategy
· Diversified income streams: Map out all sources, including public pensions, employer-sponsored plans, RRSPs/401(k)s, and private investments.
· Tax optimization: Implement withdrawal sequencing to minimize tax.
· Healthcare & long-term care: Factor in rising medical costs by estimating future needs based on family history.
2. Physical & Mental Wellness
· Prioritize healthspan: Focus on “healthspan” (years spent in good health) by incorporating strength training, cardiovascular exercise, and nutritional planning into daily routines.
· Psychological readiness: Develop a retirement identity. Create a vision for daily life that includes hobbies, lifelong learning, and mental stimulation.
3. Social & lifestyle planning
· Social connection: Proactively combat isolation by joining community groups, volunteering, or moving closer to family.
· Housing & location: Align housing choices with your desired lifestyle and future care needs.
4. Legacy & Estate Planning
· Unified documentation: Maintain up-to-date wills, trusts, and beneficiary designations. Ensure you have established medical and financial Powers of Attorney.
· Use the concept of legacy (best grandmother, fabulous granddad) and incorporate actions to make it a reality.
5. On-Going Management
· Annual reviews: Treat your plan as a living document. Schedule regular reviews with a certified financial advisor and holistic retirement coach.
